The fact that I can say that I have friends is something you could describe as a miracle. Being constantly told not to have or keep friends, you would expect that I would never enjoy the joys of true friendship. “They could destroy you or hurt you or be a sort of hindrance to you. Just be yourself," my mum used to say back then.
I believed it until I met this amazing young woman. Her name is Omotoyosi. She taught me the true meaning of friendship. Omotoyosi, "my junior" in school at that time, came into my life randomly. When I say randomly, I mean from the blues. Her mother, family members and friends were anonymous to me.
Despite the fact that I did not know her so well, I took a risk of "squatting" her in school back then. I mean, since I am not the "keep a friend" kind of person you know; I just took the risk. Time passed and we grew really fond of each other. From eating together to reading together to praying together and practically doing everything together – we were inseparable!
For someone who is not used to having an extra party cling to her, it was a wonder how I perfectly adjusted to the new phase life brought me. Difficulties came my way, and according to this saying, "In difficult times, you know who your true friends are", those were the times I realised I did not have a friend but a sister in "Yosi" (that’s what I call her).
Financially, she was there. Emotionally, Omotoyosi was a bag of advice, dishing out the right words at the right moment. I loved the fact that she was timely. Spiritually, she was God's gift to me. As a fellowship leader, she was just outstanding – a strong woman of faith.
Omotoyosi has come a long way with me and years after leaving our university, she is still my most cherished soul. If I get to find out that her heart is "literarily" made out gold, I won’t be surprised. She is definitely worth more than gold to me.
I am very glad our paths crossed and I'm glad my whole mentality about friendship has been changed as a result of this one beautiful soul...OMOTOYOSI.
Her friendship is one that means the most to me.
God bless you 'Yosi mi.
